NHS at 70: Easington MP Pledge to Protect NHS for Future Generations

July 9, 2018 Press Releases 0

Easington MP Grahame Morris celebrated the 70th anniversary of the NHS with staff at Peterlee Community Hospital and called on Theresa May to back Labour’s pledge to protect the NHS for future generations:

“The NHS remains one of Britain’s most cherished institutions and Labour’s greatest ever achievement. It has stood the test of time as the most powerful engine for social justice we have ever seen.

“I want to pay tribute to our hardworking staff at Peterlee Community Hospital and across the NHS, whose tireless dedication and compassion has touched all of our lives. Every minute of every day our NHS demonstrates sheer compassion in action.

“Of course the creation of the NHS in 1948 was neither inevitable or uncontroversial. The Tories voted against it 22 times; the Tory health spokesperson said of the NHS Bill “we are taking a step from which there will be no going back. I believe it would be a fatal step”.

“Theresa May’s pledge on funding will mean nothing to patients until she clearly outlines which taxes are going to rise to pay for it. What’s more the Tory failure to properly resource public health budgets, training budgets and crucially social care budgets mean Tory claims of a long-term plan are hollow.

“Patients will fear that it’s the same old Tories, failing to support our NHS just as they did 70 years ago.

“On the 70th anniversary of our NHS we should remember the millions of lives bettered and lengthened by our NHS. Labour will always stand up for our NHS, our brilliant NHS staff, and protect the service for generations to come.”
