Easington MP Grahame Morris has warned the Tories are ‘failing to protect the public’ after new figures revealed crime in the region is soaring, as Tory cuts sent police officer numbers nationwide to historic lows.

In County Durham, violent crime rose by 45%, robberies rose by 49% and total recorded crime rose by 31%.

Since 2010 Durham Constabulary has lost 366 officers.

Easington MP Grahame Morris said,

“The public are now being forced to pay the price for the reckless risk the Tories took with public safety when they slashed 21,000 officers.”

“Our police are at breaking point and these shocking figures reveal the Tories are failing in their duty to protect the public.

Theresa May is directly responsible being Home Secretary and Prime Minister for the last eight years. She should apologise for her shameful comments in 2015 when she accused Police Offers of “crying wolf” and “Scaremongering” when they were raising concerns about police cuts.

The Prime Minister is a threat to public safety and has empowered criminals at the expense of our communities”

Louise Haigh, Labour’s Shadow Policing Minister said:

“The Tories have lost control of the fight against serious crime.”

“Rather than tackle surging crime we have a Prime Minister so overwhelmed by fighting internal battles that she was desperate to go on holiday early.”

“It is high time the Prime Minister and Home Secretary faced up to their responsibility and urgently act to put police officers back on our streets. The Tory record on crime has seen eight years of wretched failure with devastating consequences for our communities.”
