IERThe way you register to vote has changed to Individual Electoral Registration (IER). Under individual electoral registration, each person is now required to register to vote individually, rather than by household.

You can register to vote online at:

www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

If you don’t want to register online you can download and print paper forms from the gov.uk website.

What you need to know

You’ll need your National Insurance number to register.

You can find this on your National Insurance card, or in official paperwork like payslips, or letters about benefits or tax credits. You can find a lost National Insurance number on the gov.uk website.

If you can’t provide your National Insurance number you’ll be asked why during your application.

Reasons to register:

  • To be able to vote in the general and local elections you must be on the electoral register.
  • By law you must register to vote or you could be fined up to £80.
  • You may find it difficult getting credit for a loan or mortgage if you are not on the register.
